SEO - Search Engine Optimization
Search Engine optimization means to make your site Search Engine Friendly. Simply put Search Engines ONLY care about being able to deliver relevant results when someone searches them. IF You don't tell the search engine who you are and what you offer, and where you should be listed - the search engine won't spend any time trying to figure it out.
SEO is not something you do to a site. It's how you Build the site.
Step 1: Decide Who You Are. Define your offering in 10 key words or less. Follow the 80/20 rule: 80% of your profits come from 20% of your offerings.
Step 2: Find out what your customers call "it". You are an "industry insider" - don't assume your customers know, or use, your vernacular.
Step 3: Tell the Search Engine who you are. A) Your Domain Name and the Title of your home page are the first steps in telling a Search Engine who you are. B) Followed by your headline on the page. C) Followed by the first paragraph or bullet points. D) Meta information is also be helpful. But not nearly much as it once was. E) Robot meta information - tells the search engines to index your site
Step 4: Key Word Loading This is Extemely straight forward - If You want to show up in the search engines under "Super Widgets" You MUST use the words "Super Widgets" on your home page. The more times you use "Super Widgets" the more the Search Engine is going to believe this is a website about "Super Widgets." Note: Don't Go Overboard! It's called Search Engine Spamming and will get you kicked off the Engine.
Step 5: Search Engines are BLIND! Search engines can ONLY read text. They can't see pictures and they can't read text in pictures. Or Flash! IF the only thing on your home page is a beautiful Flash Animation - You don't exist! If you've ever wondered why some sites have a second set of menu links at the bottom of the page this is why. The Search engines can't read their pretty flash menu. So they have to put on a second set of text links - or they only have a 1 page website.
Step 6: Label your pictures & graphics The "alt= " tag next to every graphic in the html tells the search engine what's in the picture. This can also be used for Keyword loading.

SEM - Search Engine Marketing
Search engine Marketing also known as Pay Per Click or Cost Per Click advertising is buying a sponsored listing on a Search engine. 5-10 Years ago this used to be sooooo easy. Just pick a keyword and bid higher than the competition and you were at the top of the list. Not Any More!
SEM is Highly competitive. What you're doing this month is going to change next month.
Quick Overview of Adwords: A) Pick your Geographic Market A) Pick Keywords B) Write an Ad C) Set your Daily Budget D) Turn on Your campaign. At least that's what Google says - You're going to waste a lot of money that way. Tip 1: Geographic Relevancy IF you're customers have to see you in person. DON'T Advertise outside a 50 mile radius of your location! Why spend money advertising to people who are never going to visit you.
Tip 2: Website Relevancy Your website Must use the key words you are advertising under! If the Key words (or at least recognized synonyms) you're advertising under aren't on the page. It's going to cost you more money. Tip 3: Key Words You are an "industry insider" - don't assume your customers know, or use, your vernacular. Use the Key Word Tool in Adwords to figure out what synonyms are the most used/popular. Consider changing the copy on your site to match these findings. Tip 4: Key Words in Ad. The key words you advertise under need to be in the headline of the Ad. If they're not it's going to cost you more money.
Tip 5: Use "FREE" If you use the word Free in your ad, you will see a big jump in your click through rate. Free Quote, Free Sample, etc...
Tip 6: Negative KeyWords Set up negative keywords so you Don't Show up where you don't want to. Example: RMI Laser sells Laser Marking Systems. We Do Not want to show up under Laser Pointers. Making "Pointer" and "Pointers" negative keywords saves us from blowing the budget on curiousity clicks. Tip 7: Hire a Pro or become one... I hate saying this because it turns this whole page into a sales pitch. But, it's true non the less. SEM is extremely competitive. If you're budgeting more than $100/month on Adwords - you will save money in the long run by hiring a pro.
